True on the economies of scale bit - although the batteries are always going to be pricey.

I keep hammering the same point here, but the Volt would see a quite significant fuel economy boost by switching to a diesel engine to charge the batteries and run the motors. Sort it out, US car companies...it's not like we don't sell diesel here.

That is true. I'm surprised nobody has brought even diesel based hybrids here yet. I recall hearing VW was planning on it, but I don't remember where I read that.

Wow, I just watched the keynote and my god this guy is hard to stand. I've watched previous keynotes and he never seemed this bad. The charisma he's displayed in the past has been replaced with smugness. He acted like the iPhone was the second coming of christ and we were so lucky that he existed to bring it upon us.

When really, this is probably the single worst keynote for Mac users that he has ever given. No hardware updates. No 10.5 preview. Not even iLife and iWork '07! Plus, very people I know are going to be interested in spending $600 + $60 a month or more to use this phone while plenty of us would love to spend $300 or $400 or even more on a full-screen video iPod. God, I wish this keynote was all some nightmare and in the real one Apple actually gave us something we wanted.

i totally agree with you. "aint that just cool?" "probably the best photo management program in the world".

he's was pretty hard to stand.

He probably did pocket the cash, since he asked if everything was cool when he handed me the bag, that def ran through my mind a few times.

Just to say that that metal one on the Foxconn box has the same serial as the iPod nano 16GB Chromatic.

Yes, if it's A1285. Hard to read...

Just looked up A1289, it's the 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro.

    Either way, B.S.

Bleh - don't waste your time waiting or anything. Really, it's not worth it. I was excited, but it's all for nothing unless you want one of the two items that were listed in the ticker.

Apple will need to open up osX to generic PC's but i can understand they'll want to wait until the Mac growth is stalling. Maybe at about 10% marketshare ?

Dividends, yes that would be a good idea, what with $10 billion in cash on hand. Microsoft finally decided that their cash horde was becoming a bit of an embarrassment and declared one.

Seriously, the more I think about it, the more upset I am that they aren't offering one. I mean, what the heck are they goint to do with $10 billion? Even the most aggressive expansion and R&D strategy doesn't justify holding onto that. And it would be a great way to offset any damage from the options fiasco. And it would boost the shares 5% (at least) on announcement. They USED to pay a dividend (1987-1995). It's time to bring it back!

This shell may be fake, in terms of design I also think it looks a bit archaic, "squared", but looking back at this last iMac and the iPad (with the aluminum back cover) i guess that's the way Apple will go with the next iphone.

    It'll look DAMN sexy :D

Way to go Malim :). Can it be a first prototype?

    Quoting from the Apple website:

"Shopping event is available only at the online Apple Store on November 24, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PST and at Apple retail stores."

So sale continues for a few more hours.

What I find interesting is Apple gave a press conference which involved a largely scientific analysis and presentation, wherein they showed:

    - The antenna issue impacts 0.55% of users to the degree they expressed concerns.

    - The call loss issue is 1/100 or less, worse for the new 4 model than the prior 3GS model.

    - The attenuation issue is user impacted and minor behavioral issues can abate it almost entirely.

    - Case use was far higher on 3GS vs 4 which accounts for nearly 100% of the experienced issues, thus Apple offered free cases to 4 users who did not buy a case due to supply chain and availability issues.

    - The new antenna system is more sensitive, effective and has better actual reception than either the prior model or most other competitors.

    - The issue is largely in areas of poor reception to begin with. One factor in this is USA cell cites are less densely distributed than EU sites and the limits of GSM are more revealed here. We have more geographic area to cover so carriers have opted to solve the issue with near minimum density cell site distribution.

All of these factual, supported, known things are widely disregarded in headline style media reports that regurgitate the now disproven claim that Apple iPhone 4 has "an antenna problem", "reception issues", or "a dropped call problem". While there are limited and anecdotal examples of it, largely reproducable from known conditions, there is no there there on an overall and general basis.

Proposed next gen features in all iOS devices:
    Mobile hotsopt (tethering)
    VoIP
    Bluetooth keyboard/track ball/trackpad compatible
    Dock to full USB access.

I live in The Netherlands, and I don't have any TV shows either, so it's not only in Denmark, etc. which you can't get them. And as far as I can you can only get them in the US (maybe there are other countries where they are awailable, but there aren't many).

The issue is that ITMS needs to get distribution rights in each and every country where they want to distribute anything, which can be a pain, and for europe the networks might not be interested in making a TV Show available via ITMS before it have been air'ed as they then will loose ad money.

It is not just a simple matter...

As for DRM, one of the reasons for this is going on is that when you download something from ITMS it will only play in either iTunes or on a iPod which is locking the user to a single device.

We where all laughing when the EU fined MS - issue is that Apple is not much better in this case....

I'm a Mac head, but I do not like the DRM Apple is forcing me to live with....

    Casper

I see what you mean and I agree to some extend...

But no disrespect when I say, you really are not forced to live with the DRM... No one is, and that is the main point here...

If people really are that bothered by it, then all they need to do is to stop using the Apple iPod and iTunes.

I for one, really don't feel affected by this, not even a little bit...

And you are right, it is only the American version of the iTunes that offer TV shows... At the moment...

On a more serious note, I wonder how all this drama surrounding Apples DRM will impact the ODF argument? I mean, if you have the right to open a recording you PURCHASED on whatever type of player you wish, shouldn't you also have the right to open a document YOU CREATE, on any type of app that handles that type of data, without losing any functionality? I mean, shouldn't a Pages doc open on word without losing the formatting? Shouldn't an excel file open on Lotus? Did Steve Jobs forsee this? Is it all part of some masterplot???

Respectfully, I think you're missing the point. In its totality, installing an app is more like:

    1) Google or otherwise search for an app. Make sure its the Mac version, compatible with your OS version, processor, etc. There probably won't be any reviews, more like select quotes from people who liked it.
    2) IF you trust that website, fill out your credit card information, PayPal account, etc.
    3) Download it and do the process you described for installing.
    4) If you need to re-install the app, buy a new computer, etc. hope that the company allows you to re-download it.
    5) If you have a good/bad experience, good luck reviewing it or rating it.

I'm a pretty tech-savvy guy and I still appreciate the ease of the Mac App Store.

Yet, inexplicably, we made due without a walled garden for decades.

    1) Wow, you will have to do some research. There might even be some reading involved. Also, since OS 10.6.6 + is the only OS that will run the store, its pretty easy to ensure compatibility.

    2) Most apps I use are free (not stolen), so payment does not factor in unless I doneate via PayPal. Also, since Apple is taking a pretty large slice of the revenue, at some point this will have to be passed on to the consumers

    3) A file on a thumb drive is easier to pass along than download a file from the internet via the Mac App store.

    4) Or you could store the file on your hard drive or a NAS, or a cheap external drive. Noting says you have to re-download it.

    5) So I guess that sites like MacUpdate are not useful? There are plenty of review sites for OS X apps.

Its not a bad concept - if its voluntary. However, to make it a rule to compete in the Design Award is lame. As others have said, it should be renamed the MacStore App Award to reflect the narrowing of the field they are doing by only allowing App Store devs to compete.

    Just like communism

Actually, this also includes American Capitalism -- only a fistful of rich people benefit from it at the expense of the rest of the population that has been led to believe by the media that anybody can eventually become rich if they only work hard enough for it, but the truth is that this almost never happens.

I've been waiting all week for this to finally become available. I can't wait!

I'm going to upgrade it to a 128 GB SSD when I get it. It'll be a monster.
